Living in a small house means getting creative when it comes to things which take up space. Around the holidays, there really insnt a place for a tree – even through the high ceilings beg for an awesome spruce.

This year, I finally finished the project I imagined the first year in the farmhouse – decorating the spiral staircase in place of a tree.

I cut 5yds of holiday fabric in thirds and stretched the ends to make a 45ft strip and then sewn the long edge to make a long tube. I stretched elastic cord down the middle and tacked it every few feet. Finally, I laced a long string of LED lights down the center.

I wrapped the column of the staircase with the outlet at the top so it is out of the way.

The only thing left is to find the tree skirt and place it around the base. … Oh, and hang the stockings by the fire !
