Google wants to know *EVERYTHING*
Google knows everything you search for and every link you click on from their search. Now they want to know every website, picture, and download… every time, everywhere …
Most of us aren’t familiar with DNS because it’s often handled automatically by our Internet Service Provider (ISP), but it provides an essential function for the web. You could think of it as the switchboard of the Internet, converting easy-to-remember domain names — e.g., www.google.com — into the unique Internet Protocol (IP) numbers — e.g., 74.125.45.100 — that computers use to communicate with one another.
Today, as part of our ongoing effort to make the web faster we’re launching our own public DNS resolver called Google Public DNS, and we invite you to try it out.

Sounds like they are being helpful, yeah ? NO! By becoming the DNS resolver, they get to know every URL you visit, every image you look at, every download you make, every email server you touch, every bank you do online business with, every everything, every time. I personally think that is just dangerous. Unless they disclose their data retention and usage policy for "Google DNS", I won’t even kick the tires.

So what you are saying is instead of 8.8.8.8 Googles DNS should be 6.6.6
I don’t know if I would change my computers DNS settings, but always nice to have another option when troubleshooting
Funny how your little (sorry) site figured this out already, and the Big Media (even the tech media) are still busy quoting from the Google PR hacks and press release.
To paraphrase Hawkeye Pierce, “no one here but us silly farmers”.
But to be serious for a momen, digital privacy is an exponential issue. I believe “data” is the next monopoly. Whereas last century it was OS and applications, this century the winner of “capture the flag” will be the one with the most data and the analytics to unlock it.
i take the point, but by nature of the system *someone* is going to know every link i click.
should i trust Google less than i trust TimeWarner, for example? i’m not sure.
Stephen – I agree someone will have the data but two things strike me. First, Google is not a philenthopic (sp?) 503c so they must see this as data gathering branch with a revenue angle. Second, I am concerned with the growing concentration of information in the hands (and servers) of one entity.
In total agreement with you Glen. If you use Google Chrome, their type ahead already lets then know what site you’re looking for, even if you don’t google search it.
Chrome’s tracking can be throttled but if you are still worried, the Chromium source is stripped of Google’s tracking functions and released by a third party as “Iron”.
Now, now, Mr. Salmonfarm.org, you needn’t worry. Big Brother has your best interests at heart. Besides, as a citizen practicing proper NewThink, you don’t have anything to hide of course. This is doubleplusgood for all citizens of Oceania and will help us in our struggle with EastAsia, for we have always been allies with EurAsia and have always been in conflict with EastAsia. Listen to MiniTrue and allow your doubts to melt away.
Remember, Google’s unofficial slogan is “Don’t be Evil” – they must have the best interests of the rest of us at heart, right?
Trust. (you don’t need to see his identification…) Trust. (these aren’t the droids you’re looking for…) Trust. (move along…)
(this kind of thing is also, of course, why I use EveryDNS)
