What’s It #14 – insert for a knife drawer

knife drawer insert Knives are like most tools, if you buy good quality and take care of them, they last a lifetime – at least that’s the way I feel about my knives.

I started with a set many years ago. I couldn’t use the two serrated knives and in the new kitchen I am trying for a very clean look so I didn’t want the knife block on the counter either. So I decided to upgrade my mother’s knives with my block and the unused serrated knives. I added a couple new knives and gave her her own “set”. I have since added a left handed serrated knife to my set. All that was needed was a storage solution.

The farmhouse kitchen has a knife drawer. All I needed was a knife block that fit in the drawer. With all of the bamboo scraps being generated from the cabinets, it was easy to piece together an insert.

The bamboo is made from two layers of 7/8” scrap. I first sandwiched the 7/8” scrap into two glue-ups and then after running them through the planer, I sandwiched the two “planks”. I installed a stop on the table say and ran the cuts to create the blade slots which penetrate about 1” into the block. I then drilled 7/16” holes to accommodate the tang of each knife and hand carved the tapers. Finally, I installed a handle rest.

It will be installed in the draw up off the bottom and hinged at the far end. This will allow storage under the block for items such as the steel and any odd and seldom used items.

patiently awaiting my prize for the contest-winning guess of “pretty bamboo thing”…..

Well, shucks, if Roy gets a prize for that guess, then I should definitely get a prize for my highly nebulous, foggy, poorly thought through BUT partially correct guess of “… something having to do with knife storage …”

…. or whatever I said in a hazy moment of nonclarity …

    ;-)

While Ed may well have partially correct, I think I best captured the object’s essence – a pretty bamboo thing.

I should at least get a prize for doing the most sucking up during the competition.

    It *is* pretty..

    :-)
