My iPod Touch is not an iPod

itouch I recently was the fortunate recipient of an iPod Touch. I really am very happy with it. I have ZERO songs loaded on it and ZERO movies. It is perfect.

"How can that be ?!" you say ? an iPod with no songs on it and no movies on that rich screen ? I wanted a handheld PC … or was that a palm Mac … or a …. well, anyway, I didn’t’ want an MP3 player. I did want something small and easy that I could anywhere in the house and especially at night when I’d had enough of the computer. My laundry list of uses included reading the news (Associated Press), checking for new blog content (via Google Reader), glancing for any personal email, wasting a little time with a game or two (like Sudoku), and controlling my sound system (Sonos in 3 rooms);  and using it as a remote for my Popcorn Hour. I have all but the last one working the way I want and I’ve very happy with the results.

My older nephew (who used to work for Apple) was an “early adopter” of the iPhone, as was a younger professor I sometime work with. (Kind of scary that the prof is probably about 3 years older than my nephew….) I admired the iPhone, but wasn’t willing to spend the money or switch from my current service provider.

But the iPod Touch is kind of cool. My office mate has one, and I do have to stop myself from sidling over and saying (a bit plaintively) “Wow, can it really do that, too?:”
