Open for business and eventually the stairs

IMG00156-20090227-1616.jpg The band of [sheet] rockers arrived this morning with the goal of covering the entire farmhouse residence in a single day. It was a lofty goal (sorry for the pun). They needed about half a day more.

It turns out that sheetrocking is now a “piece work” contract. This means the crew is not paid by the hour. The faster they can install the sheets of chalk the more money per day they can make. They way it works is you hire a contractor to do your sheetrocking. They in turn hire a crew that does insulation an then come back and put up the boards. Then the original contractor comes in and does the taping and “mud”.

I can say from personal observation the rock crew is fast and efficient with everyone knowing they tasks – measure, cut, place, screw – and they don’t slow down or chit-chat.

Update: They say “speed kills”. Well, in this case it killed a vital cable that was in the wall. With all the possible wires to hit, they managed to chew a notch in a 35ft long HDMI cable with their spiral cutter. It will be interesting what the “boss” says about that little “oops”.
