This should be interesting. I am authoring this blog entry from within the text editor on the One Laptop per Child. It is a test system so it is not the easiest to see what I am doing. The text editor is configured for “English” and is underlining words that I misspell - and [...]

If you have not, perhaps it is not in your field of vision or you do not obsess over Internet news stories or you don’t live in Boston, Silicon Valley, or Washington, or it may be for any of a thousand other reasons. Don’t worry. Now, for those who have heard of the project and [...]

The OLPC (One Laptop per Child) computer uses a very different interface from what most people are accustom. The interface is called “Sugar”. Some think it is childish. While it was designed for a computer targeting children, and it uses very simple colors and visuals. This is partly because it is targeting children and partly [...]

While the title of this post is a bit cryptic to those not “in the know”, the news is of interest to at least a few. I participated in the “Give-1 Get-1″ campaign being promoted by Laptop.org where people in Canada and the United States with a postal address in Canada and the United States [...]

The “one laptop per child” program has a laudable goal - to educate children - all children - everywhere. Think about that for a moment. What would this world be like if we have twice as many environmental scientists, teachers, geneticists, engineers, researchers, etc. ? Education is one of the keys to unlocking this potential. [...]

There is a cool Frappr map growing for the Give1Get1 OLPCs starting to ship. The G1G1 program is primarily for the USA and Canada so most of the units will land in that part of the map but a few diligent people have managed to get them to other parts of the world. If you [...]

I heard a truck approaching down the long dirt drive and was so excited that FedEx was arriving with my OLPC XO. I looked out the window and it was UPS ! They were delivering a thermostatic switch I ordered off of eBay.
The UPS girl had not even made it to the end [...]

I have not blogged much this week because I’ve spend most of my free time reading and writing over on the OLPC Forums. Some of it has been a learning exercise while a lot of it has been an education exercise. Here is the difference …
The O-L-P-C is a “dream” - to provide one laptop [...]

I have tried to describe the OLPC to people and feel I am not a good spokesperson … too many words (I suffer from verbosity). So, it’s YouTube to the rescue !
You can also read what David wrote for his New York Time Online article.
The only correction to David’s information is that the G1G1 program [...]

There has been lots - I mean *LOTS* and *LOTS* - of press, blogs, forum posts, and news about the OLPC over the past few weeks. Mostly, this has been because of the G1G1 (give one get one) donation program.
This has been both good and not so good. The challenge to all the press is [...]

Just as the space race proved fertile ground for invention and innovation, so too is the education of the world’s children.
Are you now saying “HUH ?”
You may or may not have been the recipient of a recall letter for your laptop battery. You may or may not enjoy air travel. Now the two [...]

It is nearly midnight on the East coast of the Unites States and with that, the end of the Give 1 Get 1 donation program from the OLPC Foundation.
I was curious how successful the donation program had been - with my definition of “success” being the number of donation.
A laptop Magazine interview [...]

In a word - “Yes”.
It turns out it only takes a mild obsession to figure out how to get IBM’s Mobility Connect client (aka Lotus Mobile Connect) to run on an OLPC XO. the steps - as best as I can remember are:
copy all of the IBMwc*.rpm files to a USB stick
insert the stick in [...]

How *do* you make a complete backup image of an SD card or a USB memory stick ? And some of you may be asking *why* would you need to do such a thing ? Let me answer the second question first. A group of people have been chatting back and forth over on the [...]

I have not written about the OLPC project for many months. The reason is there has been little to write about. The hardware has not changed. It is still amazing. The software has not changed (other than a number of development releases) and still is missing critical function and numerous fundamental bugs. Most of [...]
