The battle of the media devices

For Christmas I gave myself a gift of the Mvix MX-780 media device and then questioned my choice and put my name in for a Popcorn Hour A-100. These are both Linux based media players capable of true HD 1080p output over HDMI. So, if/when I ever get that mighty big flat screen, I will have something to feed it.

I have lived with the MX-780 for four months now and it is good at what it does. But not bullet proof. My biggest complaint is it is finicky when it comes to video formats. And I’ve learned that the file extension of a file has little to do with if the media player can handle it. The software keeps getting updated so I see improvement nearly every month.

I should see the A-100 in a day or two. I already know I will need to update the software as four releases have happened since I first put my name it. I’ve heard the UI is better as is the feature set. I’ll find out for myself.

I just started listening to internet radio over the MX-100. I like it. I am quickly finding “stations” I like to listen to. I am also finding which stations are so low quality that I don’t care how good the programming. I’m bummed a bit that WOXY.com  sounds like  … well,  the internet. I hear good things about it but can’t listen to the flat, nearly mono sounding stream.
