Chincoteague Island - it’s all about the horses
I took a road trip Sunday to find Chincoteage Island - perhaps best known for the “swimming ponies” from Marguerite Henry’s 1947 children’s book “Misty of Chincoteague”. The town is pretty much a one trick pony - pun intended. As with most of this part of Virginia, most things were closed on a Sunday. Zen and I wandered around a bit and I found a seafood restaurant for lunch that managed to serve one the worst if not the worst seafood I have ever had.
As with much of the Eastern Shore, there is a good deal of conservation going on to keep the natural assets intact and to preserve wildlife and migratory bird habitats. I had packed my camera in hopes of seeing some birds (other than the Canadian Geese that have settled near where I live).
On the way back, we passed Wallops Island and discovered Zen and I were not the only bird watchers. It turns out NASA has some pretty big “eyes” looking into the skies. Of course, NASA is looking for it’s own “birds” and not those of mother nature. One of the last birds to leave Wallops Island was early September 2007. I missed it but hope to see the next one … whenever that occurs. There are also a number of UAV flights !
