Getting to know you heritage

I am not an art collector, however, I do have a good number of “works or art” around my house. The only prerequisite for something to hang on my wall is that I know the artist personally. The art spans many mediums including photography, needlework, charcoal, oils, and water colors.

Most of the work is current but one of the pieces is a bit older than me. It is a water color of a New England scene. It was given to me when we dissolved my grand parent’s house. I eventually got the back story on the work. It was painted by a relative of mine - David Strout. He had a long career painting works for … wait for it … Hallmark.

The painting came with a tattered old news clip …

David L. Strout of Pittsfield, Mass., doesn’t believe in lugging equipment he can get along without. Here he uses his skis and pole for an easel.

I’ve been told the new paper photo was staged but it is based in truth that Dave Strout did often go out skiing and took along his paints and canvas. In a pinch, he was known to use my skies and one pole as a tripod easel with the ski bindings holding the canvas.

Sounds like ingenuity and artistry are family traits.
