OLPC is here !
I heard a truck approaching down the long dirt drive and was so excited that FedEx was arriving with my OLPC XO. I looked out the window and it was UPS ! They were delivering a thermostatic switch I ordered off of eBay.
The UPS girl had not even made it to the end of the driveway, when she encountered the FedEx driver trying to make his way to the house. That’s more traffic than I usually get in a week !
So I look and the driver has an OLPC box in his hand. He hasn’t even gotten out of the truck yet and I run out with my little digital camera. I ask if I can take his picture with the box. He is confused at this request. I guess not too many people want to immortalize their FedEx delivery guy. I quickly explain the hype and the goal behind the One Laptop per Child program and then again ask if it’s OK to take his picture. He smiles and agrees.
So, for everyone else who posts pictures of themselves opening their OLPC, I want to thank FedEx for getting mine here in record time !

I’ll let you know as I get more experience. Thus far, my two test cases - internet browsing and ebook - are both non starters. my home office uses WPA security and many of the G1G1 people are struggling with it (not all, but many). as for eBooks, the activity appears to not be installed by default (yet). I’m working on the networking first and then I can download/install the read.xo activity.
The software we are receiving is somewhat “beta” in nature. there is a significant update scheduled for late January and another 3 months after that.

These delivery people deserve lots of slack at this time of year, its a very busy life and everybody is wanting their stuff yesterday. I got mine on Maui yesterday, it is very cool.
