Migrate your old POP3 mail to Gmail using IMAP

OK, if the title means nothing to you then don’t worry, I’ll blog about something else tomorrow. For everyone else, here is what this means …

gmail-imap If you have lots of old mail that you’ve fetched from your POP3 accounts over the years using Thunderbird or other email client and if that email client also supports IMAP, then now you can move all of that mail to Gmail and have it retain the addresses, dates, etc. perfectly.

All you do is add your Gmail account to the same client (in my case I am using Thunderbird). Once you have it configured and working - there are lots of other tutorials on the web these days for how to do it - you just copy and paste all the old mail to a folder in Gmail. If the old mail is already in a folder, just drag the whole folder to Gmail !

Now you have all your old and new mail in Gmail with access from your desktop client or a web browser and you have web search (and/or Google Desktop Search) etc.

It’s almost enough to make me go over to the dark side and trust Google with all of my mail. …. WAIT ! did I really just write that ?!

looks like I may have asked too much of either Thunderbird (on Linux) or on Gmail’s IMAP. I have had a number of halts, lockups, and transfer failures. I’m almost done but it was not as simple is “start and walk away”.
