It’s not the floods of 2006 - for some, it’s worse
I took one last pass around my yard and through my basement before calling it a night. the Nor’easter that arrived on Sunday has decided to hang around for an extended engagement. Some friends of mine are enjoying the performance …
In the morning I had to go the post office and found army trucks blocking our road at both ends. The water wasn’t too high at that point, but our yard was already a lake and the road was submerged in places. … I had prepared for this a little, by putting stuff up on blocks and getting anything valuable off of the floor on Sunday because we had a really good flood last spring when FEMA even got involved. I thought this couldn’t be worse than that because it took weeks of heavy rain to gradually result in a few inches of water in our building last year. Well, I was wrong.

What struck me about this story is “I’ve heard it before” - from my brother in Virginia. Hurricane Isabel bull’s eyed their town back in 2003. They thought that was the 75 year storm and the worse most long time residents had seen in their lifetime. (FYI - there are still FEMA trailers there, more than 3 years later.) The very next fall, a series of “smaller storms” hit and collectively brought even more water and more flooding than Isabel.
Call it bad luck. Call it global warming. Call it what you will. Just call your friends and families and make sure everyone is alright. Count your blessings. Lend a helping hand when you can. Because the next storm could be headed to your (or my) little corner of the world.
