Lessons Learned from my Computer Failure

  1. Is it turned on ? - that may sound like a stupid question for a 20+ year computer geek but one of the issues was the fact my new X60 has an “off switch” for the wireless. It got bumped somewhere along the way.
  2. Verify you backups. - I would have been up and running a lot faster had my full-system backup not been corrupted. Fortunately, my “base system” backup was good.
  3. It’s an end to end problem. - Not only was my laptop having problems but so was my wireless router (Linksys WRT54GX2). To be honest, it has not benne the greatest router I’ve ever bought. It will likely get replaced long before it is obsolete.
  4. Backups are not enough. - If you don’t know what you installed recently (or that may have been installed for you <ugh>) you may very well restore the problem !
  5. Friends, Romans, Countrymen … - Ask for help and suggestions. There is no reason to be embarrassed that your computer died. It will happen to nearly everyone at some point.

Here’s the rub. After all of that, I still have one of the errors / problems that precipitated the whole mess. My network devices will not allow themselves to be disabled. I get …

“It is not possible to disable the connection at this time. This connection may be using one or more protocols that do not support plug-and-play or it may have been initiated by another user or the system account”.

I’ve Googled for possible solutions but nothing is working. I don’t know how to find out what services may have attached themselves to the network devices and disabling a number of the protocols has had no effect.
