Five Things You Don’t Know About Me

There is a “blogging theme” going on out on the Internet. I stumbled across it on Carl’s blog. then again on NotesGirl’s Blog and again from Captain Oblivious. So I guess I will give it a try …

1) I studied Biomedical Engineering in college but couldn’t remember a thing in all of my biology other than the kreb cycle. While one might think that anyone who can recall the kreb cycle after 20 years could have managed the rest of college, think again- I’m lazy.

2) In highschool I worked with the phone company as a ship-to-shore telephone operator. One of the things you need to remember about the old radio telephones was that is was all on public airways - no encryption and anyone with a radio could listen. One summer a rich dude from New York was on his yacht in Casco Bay and was feeling lonely so he called his girlfriend back in the city and said; “honey, it’s beautiful up here this weekend, why don’t you fly up and join me on the boat. I’ll leave tickets at the airport for you.” She declined. 10 minutes later the same guy hales me to make another call. Different woman, exact same script !

3) I love to go diving but get to do it so seldom these days. On a company trip once I had the chance to go “diving with the sharks” . I had a blast. I also went on a dive trip to Cozumel with a group of serious divers. I was one of 6 (a six pack, as they called us). The others were all blond hair and tanned skin. When they looked at me and comment on my lack of pigment, I was left to reply, ” I work damn hard to stay this pasty white color !” BTW: it was some of the best drift diving I have ever experienced even better than in the Philippines.

4) I went to school at WPI (switching majors from Electrical Engineering, to Biomedical Engineering and finally to Computer Science because I’m lazy) but nearly flunked out my first year. I spent all of my time on stage in various community theater productions and singing groups. depending on what your definition of sex is, I lost my virginity to a castmate in one of those productions (I was a late bloomer).

5) When some people say they’ve done just about everything, I know it’s not true. I’ve had a lot of jobs (before becoming a paid geek) but still have so much more to learn. I was a telephone operator, switchboard operator for an HMO, an island hopping handyman (built a 125ft wharf with a couple of friends and dug a privy or two along the way), worked at a steal building construction company (as a receptionist and had my first experience of discrimination), raced yachts, taught sailing, built bicycles, worked for UPS (for three nights), worked in the shipping department of a startup (talk about getting in on the ground floor!), tried my hand at restoring airplanes, building furniture, and custom home remodeling (installed hardwood flooring, ceramic tile, and trim work),\. done catering (takes all the fun out of cooking), and I’m sure I am forgetting as many jobs as I’ve listed. I’ve tried lots of sports but stuck with very few of them - bicycle racing, whitewater kayaking, wind surfing, skiing, snowboarding, running (in Singapore to get in shape to trek thru Borneo), and others. BUT, I still want to learn welding, take a basic diesel mechanic course, learn hydraulics (all of the preceding to help with repairing and maintaining my farm), I want to be a better bookkeeper (is that the only word with 3 doubles?), dog trainer, I want to actually finish writing my cookbook (someday), study marine mammal communications, and add to this list faster than I check things off.

Well, those are my 5 things - long winded, but 5 things just the same. Your turn !
